Diaper changes are a frequent part of routine as a new parent. And while they might seem straightforward, there are a few tips and tricks to make them easier and safer for your newborn, whether it’s a boy or a girl. Let’s discuss how to change a diaper.

How to Change a Diaper in 8 Simple Steps:

  1. Gather your supplies: a clean diaper, gentle baby wipes, diaper rash cream (if needed)
  2. Find a safe, flat surface (on the carpet works well), and gently lay the baby on their back. You can place a towel, blanket, or changing pad under baby, if desired.
  3. Unfasten the dirty diaper and gently lift your baby’s legs and bottom by holding their ankles. Pull out the dirty diaper.
  4. With baby wipes, clean your baby’s bottom area.
  5. Let baby’s bottom air dry for a minute, or pat it dry with a cloth. This helps prevent rashes.
  6. If there’s any sign of redness or rash, apply a thin layer of diaper rash cream or barrier cream.
  7. Place the new diaper under your baby and fasten it snugly, but not too tight.
  8. Wash your hands.

Which Side Is the Front & Which Is the Back of the Diaper?

Are you having a hard time distinguishing the front from the back of a diaper? Let’s explain which side is which:

  • Identifying the Front of the Diaper: The front of the diaper is the side with smaller material coverage. It often has a color design on it or a brand logo.
  • Identifying the Back of the Diaper: The back of the diaper, on the other hand, usually has larger material coverage. It also features the fastening tabs. These tabs pull from the back to the front and secure the diaper snugly on your baby.

How to Position the Baby on the Diaper

Now you know the basic steps of a diaper change and you’re able to identify the front and back of the diaper. From here, let’s discuss how to position the diaper correctly on your baby.

  1. Lay the Diaper Flat: Place the diaper on a changing surface, with the back (the side with the tabs) under your baby. The colorful front should be at the front of your baby.
  2. Position Under Baby: Lift your baby’s legs gently and slide the diaper under them. The top of the back part should be at waist level.
  3. Bring Front Up: Pull the front part of the diaper (the colorful, smaller section) up between your baby’s legs, up to their belly.
  4. Fasten Tabs: Pull each tab around from the back and fasten them securely onto the front part of the diaper. Remember, the leg cuffs should be out (not tucked in) to prevent leaks.

Essential Tips for Changing Girls

  1. Front to Back Wiping: Always wipe from front (vagina) to back (anus) to prevent infections. Never wipe bowel movement upwards.
  2. Gentle Cleaning: Use gentle, unscented wipes or a damp cloth. Avoid vigorous rubbing.
  3. Check the Folds: Pay attention to all the folds in the genital area for thorough cleaning.

Essential Tips for Changing Boys

  1. Cover the Penis: Boys often pee when exposed to air. So either move quickly with your diaper change, or keep a clean cloth handy to cover the penis. Expect to get peed on at least a few times in this newborn journey.
  2. Point the Penis Downward: When putting on a new diaper, gently point the penis downward as you pull up the front of the diaper to prevent leaks.
  3. Check the Creases: Make sure to clean and dry all the creases and folds around the groin area.
